FAQs

What are the grants for?

The BVEDS Pay It Forward Grants are available to help alleviate financial hardship experienced by students in their final year of their veterinary or veterinary nursing degree/diploma in the UK. We do not stipulate, or set criteria, for what the grants should go towards. In doing so we hope that the grants can be used to alleviate any form hardship that a student may face.

What is the purpose of the grants?

Alongside alleviating hardship, the grants have been specifically designed to streamline the application process while maximising the pastoral support for students.

BVEDS know that applying to hardship funds can at times by arduous, with application forms and paperwork. The Pay It Forward Grants aim to support students during their studies, by providing an alternative means of financial assistance without presenting unnecessary barriers in accessing support.

Who is eligible? I’m not from a minority ethnic background – can I still apply?

Any final year veterinary or veterinary nursing student experiencing financial hardship can apply for the grants, regardless of ethnicity or any other descriptor, demographic, background, or characteristic.

The only three criteria are:

  1. Studying at a UK university
  2. In their final year of a veterinary or veterinary nursing degree/diploma
  3. In possession of a UK bank account

Can I apply in anticipation of financial hardship during my final year of studies?

All applications in advance are welcomed, where your circumstances may be influenced by financial hardship. If there is a specific upcoming situation that you can foresee, then BVEDS financial support can assist you. For example, knowing your car used for transport to, or during placement, will be due an MOT and replacement clutch is perfectly reasonable.

If I am already receiving financial support in the form of student loans or other grants, am I still eligible?

Your application will not be impacted if you are already receiving student loans or have applied for other forms of student support. If you are experiencing financial hardship, regardless of existing support, you will be eligible for the BVEDS Pay It Forward grants.

How much can I apply for?

The ‘Pay it forward’ grants are each up to the value of £500. These will be awarded three times per year, once per term.

Can I apply more than once or for more than one grant?

The ‘Pay it forward’ grants are each up to the value of £500. These will be awarded three times per year, once per term. We ask that you only apply once per term, but this does not hinder or prohibit any subsequent applications in future terms. If you are experiencing financial difficulties we encourage you to apply each term.

My university or college doesn’t have three terms in final year, can I still apply more than once?

We ask that you only apply once per deadline, but this does not hinder or prohibit any subsequent applications for future deadlines. If you are experiencing financial difficulties we encourage you to apply each deadline.

How often are grants awarded?

To offer continued support, the BVEDS Pay It Forward Grants will be awarded three times per year, once per term.

Closing dates for applications during each term will be shared on social media and websites, alongside any relevant resources relating to the grants or their application.

If able, how do I ‘Pay It Forward’?

BVEDS hopes that those receiving help consider “Paying it forward” by contributing back to the fund, when they are financially stable later in their careers. The currently available funds are small, limiting the number of grants available each year. However, it is hoped, that as this grows, the fund will be able to support even more final-year students.
